Jun 27, 2024 (newstodate): In 2031, the full responsibility for air traffic management of Greenland's 4 mio km2 airspace will be transferred from Denmark to Greenland.
One issue to be solved is whether the physical location of the coming Greenland ATM will be adjoining the new Nuuk Airport, opening in November 2024 - or somewhere else in the country.
The operator of the ATM is Denmark's NAVIAIR that reportedly supports the locality at the Nuuk Airport for easier links to operators and other stakeholders, while Greenland's government would prefer the coming new facility and its employees to be placed elsewhere in the country to support decentralization, pointing to Narsarsuaq and Kangerlussuaq as viable locations.
Due to the sustained differences in points of view, the issue has now been temporarily put on hold.
Today, air traffic operating above 19,500 feet is managed by Canadian and Icelandic institutions, while costs are levied on the airlines.
By contrast, air traffic below 19,500 feet is managed by the Danish Naviair and the Danish Meteorological Institute, with costs carried by the Danish state.
