Jun 26, 2024 (newstodate): After a test phase starting earlier this year, shipments by air of fresh seafood from Greenland are now going steady, entering scheduled operations.
The shipments are carried by Air Greenland from Greenland's Transatlantic airport at Kangerlussuaq to Copenhagen Airport for onward trucking to the auction hall at Hanstholm, Denmark, arriving ready for sale after only 20 hours from catch by Greenlandic fishermen.
-The tests have proved the viability of the concept, and we are now starting working according to plan with two to three tonnes per week from July, says Mads Petersen, Nutaaq Seafood CEO, and key driver behind the new export business.
-From the start, live snow crabs have been shipped from Greenland, but we are now to introduce also fresh trouts and halibuts to the markets. The fresh halibuts are actually already on sale in the Dutch market via uplift from Copenhagen by KLM, an interline partner to Air Greenland.
-We appreciate the growing interest and support from Air Greenland in the new venture, boding well for the opportunities arising with the opening by November of Transatlantic flights from the new Nuuk Airport
-Also, new potentials for export of fresh seafood landed at outlying sites in Greenland are opening with adjustments to Air Greenland's schedules, adding more cargo capacity and benefiting the local fishing communities, which remains a key point for us.
-Earlier, the global market was acquanted only with frozen Greenlandic seafood products; our challenge now is to turn attention to the fresh seafood from Greenland and prove to the customers that these products actually derive from Greenland even if they seem to be sold by the Danish auction house, says Mr Petersen.
