Jun 10 2024 (newstodate): Once big in cargo, Sweden's Gothenburg Airport has seen total flown volumes dropping over the recent years - but May 2024 did see growth.
In May, the airport thus handled 1,439 tonnes of flown cargo which was an increase by 5.5 percent, y-o-y.
Total volumes comprised 601 tonnes of exports which was still down 2.2 percent, y-.o-y, but import volumes were up by 11.8 percent to 838 tonnes.
In the first five months of this year the airport has handled 6,004 tonnes of flown cargo, still down 5.9 percent, y-o-y, but an improvement compared to Jan-Apr 2024 that saw volumes down by nine percent.
The airport has lost much cargo to Copenhagen Airport, with export shipments formerly flown out of the airport trucked to CPH instead for uplift.
The latest figures indicate that shipments are now slowly returning to Gothenburg Airport for uplift as the airport's belly capacity is building up again with the opening of new routes and more frequencies.
By comparison: in 2004, Gothenburg Airport handled a total of 64,455 tonnes of air cargo, up 19 percent on the preceding year, handling some 15 weekly Boeing 747 and MD-11 freighter operations, in addition to DHL and TNT freighter traffic.
