Jun 12, 2024 (newstodate): GPS jamming remains a problem for commercial aviation in the Nordic region.
As one latest example, Finnair was forced to abort landing at the Finnish domestic Joensuu Airport due to GPS signal spoofing on June 11, 2024.
Without alternative systems, Joensuu Airport, the regional capital of North Karelia bordering to Russia, relies on GPS for landing procedures, and the captain decided to return to Helsinki, resulting in the cancellation of the return flight from Joensuu to Helsinki.
For safety reasons, Finnair earlier temporarily suspended flights on its route connecting Helsinki and Tartu Airport, in Estonia, from April 29 to May 31, 2024, after GPS jamming caused two Finnair flights to return to Helsinki due to GPS disturbances over Estonia.
