Jun 19, 2024 (newstodate): The Russian low-cost carrier Pobeda is "celebrating" the imposition of new sanctions with the announcement of a new international route.
Starting from October 1, 2024, the carrier will launch flights to Abu Dhabi from Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan, Russia, as the first new international destination announced since the Canadian government imposed sanctions on Pobeda on June 13, 2024.
Pobeda also became the first Russian commercial airline to be included in the US Treasury sanctions list published on May 1, with sanctions to take effect on July 30, 2024.
Pobeda's current route network to non-CIS countries includes flights to Dubai and Abu Dhabi as well as to several Turkish destinations.
Barred by sanctions from flights into most markets around the world, Russian airlines are fighting hard to come up with new services to generate revenue.
One unique and rather surprising service on offer since September 1, 2022, has seen Pobeda introducing the additional option "smoking on board".
At an extra fee of 1,000 rubles, passengers may purchase rights to smoke onboard flights when booked online, while the charge will be 2,000 rubles if purchased at check-in..
