Jun 06, 2024 (newstodate): Lithuania is keen to develop the country's air connectivity beyond individual airlines' own planning.
The state-owned company Lithuanian Airports has successfully developed a risk-sharing model to promote the development of flight routes needed by the country: one example is the continued operation by LOT on a key route connecting Vilnius Airport and London City Airport through the implementation of a new incentive program built on a risk-sharing model.
The model implies that the airline agrees with Lithuanian Airports to share, first, the risk, later the profits generated by the operation.
The model has also induced airBaltic to launch flights between Vilnius and Hamburg as well as between Vilnius and Lisbon, with twice-weekly services starting from May 2024.
This year, more international routes are planned, including regular flights from Vilnius to Dusseldorf starting already by this autumn, and to Madrid, and from Kaunas to a yet-unnamed European hub.
In 2024, the Lithuanian government has authorized the investment of EUR 5 million for Lithuanian airports to develop a project to promote the development of flight routes.
