Jun 10, 2024 (newstodate): Russia's commercial aircraft industry is struggling as a result of western sanctions.
According to Russian media, Aeroflot is now refusing orders for regional aircraft SJ-100 and medium-haul Tu-214 due to delays in the development of import-substituted versions of these models.
Instead, the Aeroflot Group may instead opt for transforming all 339 aircraft into another Russian-built aircraft, the MC-21.
Originally, the Aeroflot Group in 2022 signed an agreement with the United Aircraft Corporation to purchase 89 SJ-100, 210 MC-21 and 40 Tu-214 aircraft.
In 2023, 18 MC-21-310, 34 SJ-100 and 11 Tu-214 from this agreement were turned into a firm order through a financial leasing agreement with Avia Capital Service.
The start of deliveries of the SJ-100 was expected at the end of 2023; the first MC-21s were supposed to arrive at the airline in December 2024.
But due to difficulties with import substitution, the UAC moved the start of deliveries of SJ-100 to 2026, start of deliveries of the MS-21 was moved to 2025, and the target date for the start of deliveries of MC-21 is now the fourth quarter of 2025.
