Jul 02, 2024 (newstodate): The Albanian LCC Albawings is now effectively out of business.
The carrier, founded in 2015 by Gentjan Kole and Dhimiter Tola and landing its AOC in February 2016, has now returned its three Boeing 737-400 to the lessor, leaving business.
Strong pressure in the Albanian market from competitors Wizz Air and Ryanair forced Albawings to move traffic to Kosovo from the start of this year.
Based at Tirana, Albawings initially focused on traffic between Albania and destinations in Italy.
However, facing intense completion from WIZZ Air and Ryanair Albawings moved its flights away from Albania to set up a new base at Prishtina, in Kosovo.
The carrier planned to launch flights from Prishtina to 11 European destinations, including new flights to Malmo, Sweden.
Flights to Malmo were planned to commence on January 25, 2024, with Albawings offering two weekly rotations on the route - but the plan never materialized.
