Jul 03, 2024 (newstodate): Some clarity on the future of Greenland's so far only Transatlantic airport at Kangerlussuaq is now firming up.
As the Transatlantic flights move from Kangerlussuaq to Nuuk Airport from November 28, 2024, as well as to the coming new airport at Ilulissat from 2026, the Danish Ministry of Defense takes over responsibility, turning the airport into a military base for an initial period of three years.
In addition to military operations by Danish and other NATO forces, the airport will remain open also to civilian and commercial traffic, as well a serving as an alternative airport in case of adverse weather conditions at other airports in Greenland.
While Kangerlussuaq Airport in the south of Greenland is closed for traffic due to weather conditions only few days of the year, Nuuk Airport is often shrouded in mist and fog as well as experiencing strong winds forcing temporary closure.
