Aug 28, 2024 (newstodate): Since 2022, the Volga-Dnepr group companies have been under sanctions by the UK, the European Union and Canada.
Now, USA has also included the Volga-Dnepr Group on its sanctions list, prohibiting US citizens and companies from providing any funds, goods or services to persons included on the sanctions list, as well as receiving funds, goods or services from them.
The largest of the group's airlines, AirBridgeCargo, ceased flights in March 2022 after the Bermuda aviation authorities revoked the airworthiness certificates for its fleet of Boeing 747 and 777 cargo aircraft.
Unlike many other Russian airlines, the carrier did not transfer its aircraft to the Russian register, initially intending to restart business with Il-96-400T aircraft, but the aircraft were instead transferred to Sky Gates.
Operating Boeing 737 freighter aircraft, Atran resumed flights in 2023 with An-12 aircraft on Russian registration.
Finally, Volga-Dnepr Airlines itself has continued operating its fleet of An-124 and Il-76 aircraft, some of which have however been arrested at airports in Europe and Canada.
Together, the airlines of the Volga-Dnepr Group accounted for over half of Russia's total cargo transport in 2022.
