Aug 26, 2024 (newstodate): Norway's Evenes Airport has demonstrated the potentials for seafood uplift directly out of the northern regions, as an alternative to Oslo Airport in the far south of the country.
In January-July 2024 the airport thus generated a total of 3,629 tonnes of international cargo carried by Qatar Airways Cargo's weekly flight from Evenes to Doha with Boeing 777F since October 31, 2023.
-We did experience a temporary hiccup in July 2024 due to a two-weeks stop on all activities - but we are fully back to normal again in August, says Stig Winther, CEO Perishables Center Nord, at Evenes Airport.
-We are keen to grow the freighter traffic; however, today's double CO2-tax imposed at all civilian and military airports puts an effective brake on expansion of freighter services at the airport.
-Without this heavy taxation, Evenes Airport would see more operators and more destinations than is the case today. We remain however optimistic about the sustained growth at Evenes Airport and would indeed wish to see dedicated cargo aircraft parking stands as an important addition to our existing infrastructure, says Mr Winther.
During the period from February till summer 2021, Virgin Atlantic Cargo also operated two weekly flights from Evenes to London Heathrow in cooperation with Kuehne & Nagel Norway, using Boeing 787-9 aircraft to lift seafood belly cargo into Virgin's route network in London, with onward transfer to the US market.
