Aug 14, 2024 (newstodate): Lithuania is keen to develop the country's air connectivity beyond individual airlines' own planning.
Last year, the state-owned company Lithuanian Airports developed a risk-sharing model to promote the development of flight routes needed by the country; one first example was the continued operation by LOT on a key route connecting Vilnius Airport and London City Airport through the implementation of a new incentive program built on a risk-sharing model.
Now, the model has also been exploited by the Latvian carrier airBaltic, due to launch flights from Vilnius Airport to its fourth destination in Germany: Dusseldorf.
Starting from October 31, 2024, airBaltic will go year-round with a twice-weekly service, adding Dusseldorf to the existing airBaltic-destinations Berlin, Hamburg and Munich.
The model implies that the airline agrees with Lithuanian Airports to share, first, the risk, later the profits generated by the operation
