Aug 26, 2024 (newstodate): Kazakhstan's Air Astana is planning for the opening of new routers to Asia.
One important step is the signing of a code-share agreement with Japan Air Lines allowing for joint codes on flights on a new between Almaty and Tokyo slated for launch in spring 2026 and to be operated by Air Astana with its planned delivery of Boeing 787-9 aircraft scheduled by the end of 2025.
The expansion with a new route to Japan is part of an ambitious strategy revealed by the company earlier this month, including also the opening of flights within 12 to 18 months from Astana to Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore.
At the same time, Kazakhstan is laying a solid groundwork to grow its role in international civil aviation in the coming years.
As one element, Almaty Airport has increased its capacity by 50 percent with the opening of a new 53,000 m2 passenger terminal designed for the handling of 14 million passengers, expanding the airport's capacity by 50 percent.
The new terminal will see the handling of 15 international routes to 10 countries by Kazakh and foreign airlines, Kazakhstan's Civil Aviation Committee reported.
