Aug 21, 2024 (newstodate): Sanctions on Russia are taking a heavy toll on the cargo business of Russia's Tolmachevo Airport.
Prior to the sanctions, Russia's Novosibirsk Tolmachevo Airport successfully served regular cargo flights by Russian and foreign airlines including Cargolux, Cargolux Italia, Lufthansa Cargo, and the Belgian cargo carrier Challenge Airlines.
With two ICAO I and II runways, Novosibirsk Tolmachevo Airport also served as a diversion airport on Polar route 1.
Now times are harsh for the airport seeing its volumes down by 17 percent, y-o-y, in H1/2024, to only 11,350 tonnes.
-The decline in cargo transportation by air began in the summer of 2022, after the introduction of sanctions against Russia, which resulted in a ban on Russian airlines entering the airspace of the European Union. Russia, in turn, introduced retaliatory sanctions on flights of airlines from unfriendly countries, says Sergey Maksimov, President of the Union of Transport Workers, Forwarders and Logisticians of Siberiain an interview on Russian media.
According to Mr Maksimov, the volume of export and import shipments between Russia and China has also dropped from spring 2024 due to the introduction of secondary sanctions by the United States and EU countries against Chinese companies
-As a result, a number of Chinese companies have terminated contracts for the supply of products, including industrial products, from China to the regions of Siberia and from the regions of Siberia to China.
