Aug 01, 2024 (newstodate): SAS is reportedly mulling plans for opening of new flights from Copenhagen to South America.
According to a Costa Rican blog managed by the country's travel industry, Costa Rica's Tourism Board, along with other authorities, is making significant progress in negotiations with SAS to establish a new direct route from Copenhagen to San Jose offering two weekly rotations with Airbus A350 aircraft.
If plans - not confirmed by the carrier - turn into reality, this would mark the return by SAS to South/Central America after a long hiatus.
Until the end of the 80'ies, SAS was operating flights on a route network comprising Rio de Janeiro, Montevideo, Buenos Aires and Santiago de Chile- all with DC-8 and later also DC-10 aircraft.
The last South American route to go was the route from Copenhagen to Rio de Janeiro, axed by the early 90'ies and replaced by Varig operations that were also cancelled few years later.
