Aug 07, 2024 (newstodate): Doubts have long been cast on the commercial future of Greenland's so far only Transatlantic airport at Kangerlussuaq after the opening of the new Transatlantic airport at Nuuk by November 28, 2024.
While the airport's sustained operations will be maintained by military activities, the commercial side of the airport has been more insecure.
Now, Air Greenland has landed a contract with the tour operator Albatros Arctic Circle to provide two weekly rotations on the route between Copenhagen and Kangerlussuaq during the period between March and October 2025.
The route is expected to develop combination tourism and will add morning and evening flights from Nuuk to Copenhagen via Kangerlussuaq and afternoon flights from Copenhagen.
The flights will be operated with leased-in capacity of one Boeing 737-800 aircraft from the Danish ACMI and charter carrier Jettime that is already dedicating one aircraft to Air Greenland operating five weekly rotations to Kangerlussuaq, Greenland in this summer's schedule
While a boon for Kangerlussuaq Airport, maintaining Transatlantic operations at the airport after the opening of new airports in the country may be a threat to the over-all economic calculations behind the financial basis of Greenland's Transatlantic airports package.
