Sep 04, 2024 (newstodate): The situation in ground handling at Copenhagen Airport is in for a major reshuffling.
As a consequence of SAS' Chapter 11 exit and the EU Commissions' approval of restructuring aid for SAS, the airline is obliged to exit the ground handling market, at least till the end of 2026, operating only self-handling at the airport.
SAS Ground Handling currently provides services for some 24 airlines at the airport, SAS included, so contracts with over 20 external customer airlines will have to be abrogated.
Among SGH's external customers are major airlines such as Thai Airways, Singapore Airlines, airBaltic and Icelandair that will all have to enter new contracts with other ground handling providers including Aviator Airport Services and Menzies.
In the airline customer portfolio of Aviator Airport Services are today the Lufthansa Group carriers, Etihad and Pegasus, while Menzies is handling airlines including Emirates, BA, Air Canada, Turkish Airlines and Finnair.
For each of the 20+ airline customers till now with SAS Ground Handling, issues of rates, service requirements and potential conflicts from competition with other airlines will weigh heavily and complicate decisions.
