Jan 09, 2025 (newstodate): The harsh sanctions on Russia are having a significant impact on the country's aviation infrastructure.
As the international operations by Russian airlines have declined drastically after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, efforts have instead been directed towards building up the country's domestic air travel, which is relieving the earlier pressure on the capital airports around Moscow.
In 2018, the share of traffic via Moscow was 75 percent; in 2019 it was 72 percent, in 2020 66 percent, in 2021 65 percent, and in 2022 it was still 62 percent.
But in 2024, the share of the traffic via Moscow's airports dropped to 58 percent.
Moscow's airports have also undergone changes in passenger dynamics; Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport is seeing a growth by 24 percent, y-o-y, serving as the Aeroflot Group's main hub, while Moscow Domodedovo Aiprort is down in volumes by 25 percent, y-o-y, reflecting its earlier importance as the key hub for many international airlines.
