Jan 10, 2025 (newstodate): Azerbaijan is not letting Russia off the hook concerning responsibility for the crash of an Embraer 190 aircraft crashing in Kazakhstan after being hit by an anti-air missile in Russian airspace on December 25, 2024.
After initially pointing to a bird strike as a credible root cause of the accident, Russia's president later felt obliged to condole Azerbaijan and regret the accident in the country's airspace, while still backing down from publicly admitting that the missile was indeed fired by Russian forces.
Immediately after the crash, Azerbaijan Airlines suspended flights from Baku to Grozny and Makhachkala; a few days later, the company also suspended flights from Baku to Mineralnye Vody, Nizhny Novgorod, Samara, Saratov, Sochi, Vladikavkaz, Volgograd and Ufa.
Now, Azerbaijan Airlines has also suspended flights from Baku to Kazan and will decide on the eventual resumption of operations of the routes to Russia based on the preliminary results of the investigation into the Embraer 190 crash.
